BIO

Freedom Jazz Movement [FJM] is lead by artist/percussionist Marcus L. Miller & choreographer/dancer Tamica Washington-Miller. The Millers formed the group in 1998 as a vehicle for their artistic expression.

The original cast featured the trio of percussionist Marcus L. Miller, dancer/choreographer Tamica Washington-Miller, and poet Jennifer Bowens. These three elements embody the conceptual meaning of Freedom Jazz Movement…Freedom of expression through music, movement, and spoken word. Despite her demanding schedule as Associate Director of the Lula Washington Dance Theatre, Mrs. Washington-Miller still consults and assist with the choreography and on occasion will make a cameo appearance. Most of the choreography is set on members of the Lula Washington Dance Theatre company. On occasion, the group has also featured vocalists Nailah Porter and Maiya Sykes and dancers Jennifer Tehani and Myshell Curry.

Freedom Jazz Movement was a part of the artist roster for the Segerstrom Center for the Arts 2006-2010. Through the Center, they have performed in Southern California schools and various public spaces. In 2006 they were the support act for Chris Botti at the Carolina Theatre in Durham. The group has also headlined at Grand Performances California Plaza (2009 & 2010), the California African American Museum (2007), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1998), Bank Street College in Manhattan, NY (2006), the African Marketplace festival in Los Angeles (2006 & 2008), and at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles, CA (2012).
